Railroad workers have purposely jammed safety devices on trains at least 68 times since a fatal train collision near Baltimore in January, the head of the Federal Railroad Administration said today. Federal inspectors have discovered 68 instances in which whistles, electronic warning devices and other equipment that automatically stops trains were intentionally disabled, John H. Riley, the Federal Railroad Administrator, told a Senate subcommittee. Investigators have concluded that a whistle designed to sound when safe speeds were being exceeded had been taped over in one of the three Conrail freight locomotives that smashed into an Amtrak passenger train in Chase, Md., on Jan. 4. Sixteen people were killed and 175 were injured in the crash. ‘Accident Waiting to Happen’ More : query.nytimes.com |
