Oct. 18–SPRING VALLEY LAKE — The general manager of the Spring Valley Lake Association is leaving his post for a new life in Texas. Gordon Ryan, who took the job in December 2004, announced to the board of directors that he would be leaving at the end of November. Ryan has taken a position as executive director of a larger homeowner’s association of about 7,500 homes near where he grew up in San Antonio. “I’m going home again is what it amounts to, and I’m really pleased about that,” he said, adding that lower home prices also factored into his decision. Ryan, 63, who served in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, was the city manager of Grandview, Wash., and the cities of Dillingham and Kodiak in Alaska. Before coming to Spring Valley Lake, he was a department head for the city of Christchurch, New Zealand, then had a brief assignment in Las Vegas. He has written eight novels — historical fiction and political and military thrillers. Several board members said they were sorry to hear Ryan was leaving. “I’m sorry to see him leave because I think his management has been really good for Spring Valley Lake. But on the other hand, it’s something that apparently he wants to do, and I wish him well,” said Director Paul Berger. Director Cliff Bandringa said it would be difficult to fill Ryan’s shoes. “I feel happy for him; he’s moving back to his home state where he grew up,” he said. Ryan echoed the sentiment. “I will miss Spring Valley Lake,” he said. “I really enjoyed the community, notwithstanding all the turmoil that comes along with this type of a job. I will miss this board .I will miss many of the residents that put in long countless hours, but I will not miss the small group of people who find everything wrong with this board.” Board President Karen Davis said board members will start looking for a replacement right away.
