Oak Ford residents face ‘Big Dig’ bill

In May, a group of Oak Ford residents rented a backhoe and widened a miles-long swath of Howard Creek without the permits needed to alter protected wetlands. Now, each of the 80 households in the subdivision are being told they must write $1,000 checks to pay for that repair work, even residents who say they knew nothing about the “Big Dig,” as some called it. “How is it possible that homeowners who had nothing to do with this situation are now saddled with such an injustice?” resident Karen Dickason said. “Now 80 homeowners must pay for the horrible damage.” After learning about the creek widening, local and state environmental agencies threatened tens of thousands of dollars in fines, code enforcement action, and demanded that the scar in the landscape be fixed.
