A LAW library where laymen as well as lawyers can look for answers to legal problems is being established in an upstairs room at the Field Library, Peekskill’s public library -and the founders raised enough money in three weeks to start it. Bernis S. Nelson, president of the Peekskill Bar Association, which has 60 members, said the library would serve people who now have to go to the Supreme Court Building in White Plains to do reference work. She said it would be used by young lawyers who are unable to spend $10,000 or more to acquire libraries of their own; corporation lawyers with small firms and members of the public who want to do preliminary research on such matters as real estate law, inheritance, liability, criminal law and so on. The law library started with a core of 200 books, and 400 or 500 more will be added, with $13,000 donated in the last three weeks of September by members of the bar association. Mrs. Nelson said the sponsors had not yet ordered the books because several lawyers who were planning to retire might give all or parts of their libraries to the new facility, and the funds could be kept as an endowment. ”We are hoping to raise $75,000 as an endowment that will provide us with about $5,000 a year to keep the library up to date,” she said. She said that law books were continually updated because of changes in the law and new decisions, and these had to be pasted into the flyleaf. More : query.nytimes.com |
