A group of opponents to the government’s plans to build a new administrative capital filed a petition with the Constitutional Court at 10:30 a.m. Monday, asking the court to determine the constitutionality of the “Special Construction Law for the New Administrative Capital.” About the petition, the government said it not only lacked the requirements for a constitutional petition, but it was also unreasonable. Group Submits Petition The petition submitted by opponents of the capital relocation Monday claimed the capital relocation is a grave matter that constitutionally requires a referendum, but the government is violating the people’s right to vote by pushing through with the move without citizen approval; by ignoring financial investment priorities, it is violating the rights of taxpayers; when the special law of capital construction was enacted, no consultations with Seoul City were held, violating duty rights of Seoul civil servants; by pre-selecting the Daejeon/Chungcheong Province region as the site of the new capital, the government discriminated against other regions without rational basis, violating the constitutional principle of equality.
