Escondido divided over illegal immigration

Suburban city council elections typically focus on important but often less than scintillating issues such as zoning, public safety and enhancing tax revenues. Not in Escondido. Not this year. For good or bad, the Nov. 7 election has become all about illegal immigration in this city of 142,000 people. It figures to play a large role in determining who will sit on the council later this year. Seven candidates are running for two spots on the City Council, and two are running for mayor. One council candidate is incumbent Marie Waldron, who several months ago brought to the council her idea for a law that would prohibit landlords from renting to illegal immigrants.
