Deputy wants housing law change

A Guernsey politician would like to see a change in the law to help protect tenants from unsuitable accommodation.

Deputy Barry Brehaut has described some of the private housing for local people and visiting workers as “shameful”.

He has been compiling photographic evidence of dilapidated houses to present to States Members.

Mr Brehaut would like the law changed to allow third parties to report unfit accommodation. At the moment only tenants can report faults.

He said the faults include cracks in exterior walls, broken light fittings hanging off walls and wooden boards covering broken windows.
