County Construction Law Controversy

It’s back to committee, and perhaps back to the drawing board, for supporters of a controversial county law which would limit which companies could bid on county construction projects. Last month, the legislature passed a law saying that any construction company that wants to do work for the county must take part in an apprentice training program approved by the state. The program is designed to attract and train women and minorities to the construction trades. County Executive Giambra vetoed the bill saying it was a sop to unions, one that would drive up the cost of county projects and hurt taxpayers. A planned over-ride of Giambra’s veto never took place Thursday afternoon because supporters didn’t have the ten votes necessary. The measure is being sent back to committee where it will be fine tuned and supporters say they are confident of of garnering those ten votes. Channel 2’s Scott Brown reports on the apprentice program and how it works. Source : wgrz.com |
