Railroad Signal Defects Cause Many Accidents
The railroad industry and its overseer, the Federal Railroad Administration, have long maintained that signal malfunctions pose little danger and that accidents caused by them are ”extremely rare.”
But an analysis of government records found that from 1999 through 2003, there were at least 400 grade-crossing accidents in which signals either did not activate or were said to have malfunctioned. [Page A1.]
Pentagon Plans $60 Billion in Cuts
The Pentagon plans to retire one of the Navy’s 12 aircraft carriers, buy fewer amphibious landing ships for the Marine Corps and delay the development of a costly Army combat system as part of $60 billion in proposed cuts over the next six years. [A1.]
Court Asked to Affirm Class Action
Women employees of Wal-Mart Stores who contend they were discriminated against should be able to sue the company as a group, a lawyer representing them told a federal court. Wal-Mart was sued by six women claiming they were paid less and offered fewer promotions than male employees. In June, a federal court allowed 1.6 million other workers who may have similar claims to join the case, making it the largest class action ever approved in a private discrimination suit. Wal-Mart appealed the ruling. [C4.]
