Back yards vanish into lakes.

Homeowners throughout Broward County are watching chunks of their back yards disappear into lakes and canals. Although some of the most severe erosion is in western Miramar and Pembroke Pines, residents in Deerfield Beach, Coconut Creek, Tamarac, Davie, Oakland Park and other parts of Pembroke Pines are reporting problems as well. “We’ve had a tremendous amount of erosion,” said Syl Melone, of the Independence Bay community in Deerfield Beach, where some neighborhoods lost more than 30 feet of back yard. As they watch their lake banks slip away, many homeowners say their biggest challenge is finding out who is responsible for fixing it.
